A Fantasy World Inside the World of Fantasy: This is For You Tom

Goldschmidt has huge power potential. And huge balls, look at that stance

Tom asked for it and because I'm bored with recaps, I'll deliver. We're going to pretend the Diamondbacks called up Paul Goldschmidt and Collin Cowgill and make projections for each. We'll also make believe the Rays actually know what they're doing and called up Desmond Jennings. Three fairy tale forecasts after the jump.

Stream Pies (6/28/11)

CapuanoFeel free to bust a Capuano Wednesday.

At “Stream Pies,” we are serving up gooey loads of knowledge. Here, we’ll provide invaluable streaming advice on SPs who are owned in less than 30-percent of Yahoo! leagues. We list the options in order of best option to “least-best” option (with the strongest recommendations starting at the top).

For games played Wednesday, 6/29/11
Chris Capuano @DET
Though the Tigers have been scoring a lot of runs lately, they’ve only seen Capuano once (back in 2006) and the Mets SP has been on a roll over his last four starts (25 IP, 1.08 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 22 Ks).

Bruce Chen @SD
Chen, a fly ball pitcher, does well in spacious parks (3.25 ERA at Kauffman Stadium). San Diego is a spacious ball park which means, stay with me here, that Chen will be good at Petco Park.

“Stream Pies” Recommendation Results for 2011
17 Wins (43 starts), 261.2 IP, 4.09 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 5.09 K/9

Chisenhizzle My Nizzle

Written by Andrew on .

lonnieCHISENHALL

The Cleveland Indians have called up Lonnie Chisenhall from AAA Columbus (International League). Chisenhall was Cleveland's top rated prospect coming into the season, but the Third Basemen hasn't put up stellar numbers in AAA. However, he was recently named the International League Player of the Week and the recent string of success has carried over into his major league debut. Heading into the bottom of the ninth Lonnie has gone 2 for 4 at the plate with a Double and a RBI-single. Both base knocks came off the hard-to-hit Ian Kennedy. So Lonnie's up, he's hitting; now it's time for the good stuff. After the jump I'll supply the rest-of-season forecast.

Obviously, no SPs owned in less than 30-percent of Yahoo! leagues looked good enough to recommend for today’s game, which explains the lack of “Stream Pies” yesterday. Unfortunately, the pickings are also slim for tomorrow’s action.

For games played Tuesday, 6/28/11
Clayton Richard vs. KC
He continues to pitch well at home (2.25 ERA and 1.15 WHIP) and though the Royals are familiar with Richard from his White Sox days, they are light on power and pose little threat at Petco Park.

“Stream Pies” Recommendation Results for 2011
17 Wins (43 starts), 261.2 IP, 4.09 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 5.09 K/9

Mor-Noooooooo!

Another week has passed and another slew of injuries have surfaced, some with significant fantasy ramifications. I’ll be touching upon a number of heavily owned players who have found their way to the DL or trainer’s room during the past few days, including Justin Morneau, Roy Oswalt, Shin-Soo Choo, Ryan Madson and Jonathan Sanchez. This will probably be long, there will be big words and you will probably leave here smarter than you were when you started reading (not too hard for some of you). So pull up a chair, grab a six-pack and get your game face on, it's time to break down five broken down players.  The jump awaits.

Aaron Harang Injury Update

This little piggy went all the way to the Disabled List

Updating the status of Aaron Harang in regards to your Free Luebke Job.

From our very own Don Brown, PT, DPT:

A stress fracture to the 3rd metatarsal (long foot bone that connects to your middle toe) is a common injury that typically occurs in distance runners, so obviously it's a bit unusual for a fat guy like Harang, who likely hasn't run any long distances in his life, would come down with it. It does, however, explain why he's been so slow to recover as these sort of injuries are notorious for being slow healing. When a human being walks, there's a large amount of pressure exerted through the 3rd metatarsal, so getting a stress fracture to heal will involve not bearing weight through it, so to minimize the pressure Harang will be placed in a walking boot. The length of time he'll be in the boot depends on the size of the fracture, but 2-4 weeks is the typical timeline. Once cleared to remove the boot, there is a gradual progression back to weight bearing activities, starting with bikes and ellipticals and building up to walking, jogging and eventually running. Further complicating things is that the injured foot is on Harang's pushoff leg, meaning he'll repeatedly put all his weight on that foot as he pushes off the rubber. He'll need to be fully recovered before he's able to push off comfortably.

As always, with the very limited information available regarding Harang's injury and not personally treating him, it's tough to guess at how long it will take for his return. Given the information available and my experience in treating things like this, I would estimate a timeline of 4-6 weeks before he's able to even attempt running, and 6-8 weeks before he's cleared for a rehab assignment. I've seen these things take anywhere from 1-3 months to heal, so you can almost bank on a month minimum without him, and it could be longer.

Feel free to add Cory Luebke with confidence. He gets the Braves on Sunday and future dates with the Mariners and Giants.

Chris Capuano: Experienced Knife Fighter

Written by Andrew on .

chrisCAPUANO

He doesn't have a cannon and can't throw fireballs, but he's on my team anyway

The day ended early for Chris Capuano, but it was a success nonetheless. The Mets Starting Pitcher lasted six innings against the Athletics [5 H, 0 BB, 0 ER, 7 K] before exiting the game with an abdomen injury. It was a late start due to a rain delay and Capuano did relate his physical malady to being rushed into the game when play began. We'll find out more about his status on Friday, but it should be no thing. Chris can't be phased by an ailment of the abdomen, this guy has survived two knife fights with Tommy John. Putting his medical history and current health issue aside for the moment we should recognize what Capuano has done this year and why you should pay attention to the 8% owned Starting Pitcher.

More Capuano action and Thursday's recap after the jump.

For games played Friday, 6/24/11
Wade Davis @HOU
He won his last start vs. the Marlins (W, 6 IP, 1 ER, 6 Hs, 2 BBs, 2Ks), and is taking on a really weak National League lineup in the ‘Stros. Shit, until they put a better product on the field, the Astros will hertofore be known as the Stroh's Lights. Quite possibly the worst beer ever made, Stroh's Light is so bad, they sell 15-packs of it in the hopes that it’s enough to coax (or, trick) you into buying it.

But yes, I really do like Wade Davis and did not mention him solely as a public service announcement against Stroh's Lights.

Phil Coke vs. ARI
Speaking of things that suck from Detroit, Phil Coke sucks. The side effects of doing Coke were evident after I pegged him as a solid spot SP against the Rockies (in Colorado no less). Four runs and seven walks later, I swore this would be the last time I’d ever do Coke.

Alas, here we go again. How do I know Coke will be better this time around? Aside from the fact that the D-backs are loaded with lefties, I’m using the super-scientific “Good Start/Bad Start, Good Start/Bad Start” theory as that has been the trend of his last four starts. The science of this theory is too complex to explain, so rather than try, I’ll simply link you to this lowbrow “Hot Girls Montage.”

“Stream Pies” Recommendation Results for 2011
15 Wins (34 starts), 210.0 IP, 3.90 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 5.1 K/9

Free Luebke Job

Written by Andrew on .

Cory is so overlooked even cameras focus on background images when snapping pics

Aaron Harang out, Cory Luebke in. Harangutan is hanging out on the Disabled List with what was originally deemed a sore foot, but what is now diagnosed as a stress fracture to the third metatarsal in his right foot. I have no clue what that means, but I'm sure Don would be happy to explain (we'll update). In the meantime the 2% owned Cory Luebke will start Sunday's game at home against Atlanta and stay in the rotation until Harang is ready to return. Luebke has been lights out while serving time in the bullpen, but will that continue as he transitions back to starting?

More Luebke after the jump.
